Number the Stars

Set in Nazi-occupied Copenhagen in 1943, Number the Stars follows ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen as she and her family help their Jewish friend Ellen Rosen escape the German roundup. When Ellen is hidden and presented as part of Annemarie’s family, Annemarie must find courage and resourcefulness beyond her years. The novel dramatizes the Danish Resistance’s effort to smuggle nearly the entire Jewish population of Denmark to safety in Sweden, showing bravery, sacrifice, and the power of ordinary people during wartime.
