Homeschooling and
the Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program.
Potential funding
The selection of “homeschool/other” means your child would be eligible to receive $2,000 in TEFA funding for the next school year.
Your child would not have to report any standardized test results to the state if they receive a TEFA award.
Educational setting options
As the parent/guardian of a homeschooler, you may use a participating private school, including an accredited online school, to support your parent-directed education.
If enrollment is confirmed in a participating school, you may qualify for larger funding amounts ($10,474 or, for a child with a qualifying Individualized Education Program, up to $30,000).
Students who enroll in a participating school would be required to take an annual norm-referenced standardized test and report the results.
If you choose the private school option, you do not have to select a specific school when you apply. You can confirm your child’s enrollment in June.
Please Note: After March 17, families who are awarded TEFA funding may move from a higher funding amount to the $2,000 homeschool option, but they cannot move from $2,000 to a higher funding amount.
The Comptrollers Role
The Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts is focused on ensuring taxpayer dollars are spent appropriately, and empowering participants with the flexibility to choose the best possible education for their children.
They will not question you or your child's:
Educational philosophy or homeschooling approach
Pace of learning or grade level placement
Religious or moral instruction
Choice of extracurricular activities, enrichment, or therapies
Participation in TEFA does not affect your legal rights as a homeschool family or alter homeschool freedoms established in Texas law. Families maintain full authority over how, what, and when their children learn.
The Comptroller's office will collect only the information that is required by Texas law, such as student demographic data. Required data will be reported to the Texas Legislature in an aggregated format to inform future funding and policy decisions. Individual data will remain private and confidential.
